Just finished TBOLT; have mixed feelings so I'm not going to post about it at all.  Then read Darkhouse by Alex Barclay, which started out pretty good and then crashed and burned!  Now reading The Bone Collector by Jeffrey Deaver.  It's the first thing I've picked up by him, and I'm really enjoying it.

I'm reading Dying Light by Stuart MacBride. It's up to the standard of his debut novel, Cold Granite, a worthy read.

Antigone..brings back undergrad memories of running to class, balancing my poptart on top of my can of juice (the prof let you breakfast in his 8 am).

Mentioned above  am reading Carpe Jugulum by Terry Prachett, but given some of the conversations we have had on this forum, was blown away by this conversation between Granny Weatherwax and Death.

"Am I dyin'?"

YES.

"Will I die?"

YES.

Granny thought this over.

"But from your point of view, everyone is dying and everyone will die, right?"

YES.

"So you aren't actually bein' a lot of help, strictly speakin'."

I'M SORRY, I THOUGHT YOU WANTED THE TRUTH.  PERHAPS YOU WERE EXPECTING J E L L Y  A N D  I C E  C R E A M?

And I so thought that was a Thomas thing!  I humbly stand corrected (and if you lord that over me Thomas, I'll make your life a nightmare!  Wink)

What's Birdsong?  Obviously not a birding guide, I'm guessing...

why not, Sammy?  Just because others have liked it doesn't mean you're required to.  I'm honestly intrigued at what your thoughts are on it.  Anyway, I hope you'll reconsider and share  Smiley.

I've just finished "Under Orders" by Dick Francis - just because I've read all the others - and now I'm on to "False Profits" by Patricia Smiley.  It's another one of those cutesy detectivey things which is already proving a bit tiresome although with the odd laugh, it must be said.

I adore Terry Pratchett and think it's hysterical that "Where's my Cow" is now an actual children's' book and a really nice one at that (although a tiny part of me wonders does every single idea have to be turned into a product and sold?).

I bought Birdsong on my way to work today...ive read it before but that was years ago and i want to read it again

Birdsong is a beautiful awful book - extremely moving, I thought, and well deserving of another read, I imagine (although that'll probably never happen given the volume of unread books here!).

I finished TBOLT and loved it - it has been added to my teeny, tiny "To Buy" list - a tremendous honour and not one bestowed lightly!  Grin

Hello Heidi G.  I didn't dislike TBOLT, but it didn't set me on fire either (now waiting for the howls of outrage!!)  I though it was beautifully written, as Johns books always are, but it didn't make me feel anything.  A bit like looking at a beautiful painting, but only appreciating the talent it took to paint it, not being moved by it. That's the only way I can describe it.

I don't doubt that John has made this step to trying something different with huge success, but it just wasn't for me.   The fantasy genre rarely is.

Fair point, that.  And it still says something about the author that you find the work beautifully written even when it did nothing for you.

So, not sure about anyone else, but no howls here.  Not even an indignant yip.  Wink

I found it tough to read Sammy but i eventually finished it, it didnt set me on fire either...i thought it was good but i think i will reserve judgement until i read it again.  You are quite right too about it being beautifully written just like all of Johns books

Well thats a relief - don't have to dodge the firing squad just yet then!

Perhaps you're right Thomas, I should wait a few months and try again.  Sometimes the second outing is better than the first.
