Dear Folks, I will be touring in the UK in January 2003 to promote the paperback of The White Road and in the USA in March/April 2003 to promote the hardback publication of The White Road and the paperback publication of The Killing Kind. A second tour, of the UK and Ireland, is likely to follow in July 2003 for Bad Men, with the possibility of tours in Australia and New Zealand to follow. More details will be posted closer to Christmas! Hodder are releasing all four Parker books in new jackets in January 2003, and the new designs can be viewed on the website. Meanwhile, in June 2003, Bad Men will appear in hardback (except in the US, where it will follow in January 2004 or thereabouts). There has been a certain amount of delicate inquiry through the website as to what exactly Bad Men is about. Resisting the temptation to opt for the Bob Dylan answer ("It's about 400 pages."), Bad Men is set on a small island off the coast of Maine, where a huge policeman named Joe Dupree and a female rookie are forced to defend a woman and her child when her estranged husband leads a band of killers onto the island to hunt her down. Then the novel gets really strange. . . Bad Men, then, is not a Parker novel, although as things stand he does make a cameo appearance. The sixth novel may see a return to Parker, although I'm not entirely certain yet. Finally, we've added some stuff to the website. To begin with, in the ghost stories section, there is a new ghost story (at least, a ghost story of sorts), entitled The Bridal Bed. This is not one of the original five stories broadcast by the BBC, but one of a bunch of new stories written since them. I'll probably add another to the site at Christmas. Secondly, there is a section entitled "Lists." The purpose of this is to allow readers to suggest novels worth reading to one another. There doesn't necessarily have to be a theme, although please feel free to theme the list if you wish, but try to include at least five books, preferably ten, and more if you decide. I've started the ball rolling by listing some books that have influenced or impressed me. Thirdly, we're really hoping to expand the Links section, so to that end booksellers, or those of you who run mystery websites, are invited to send us details, including a brief description of the site, and we'll include them - as long as they're not mucky, of course. Thank you all for your continued kindness and support, and I look forward to meeting you on the road over the next twelve months. All best wishes, John Dear Folks, To address the most frequently asked questions: 1) Regarding the publication of the books in the United States, Dark Hollow will appear in paperback in September 2002, alongside the hardback of The Killing Kind. US publication of The White Road in hardback will follow in March 2003. 2) I'm about 99 per cent certain that the next book will be called Bad Men, and it should appear in stores in June 2003, except in the US where publication will be a little later. It is not a Parker novel, but it is a supernatural thriller, and combines elements of the crime novel with ghost stories. At least, it does at present.. 3) I will be doing a number of literary festivals in Britain and Ireland in July and August, followed by a lengthy tour in the United States and Canada in September and October. Dates have yet to be finalised, but a full schedule will be posted on the website in August. Finally, an interview with my (almost) namesake, Michael Connelly, has been added to the selection of author interviews on the site. Have a great summer. Best wishes, John Connolly Previous newsletters: 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 |
