Midnight Movie Monographs: HORROR EXPRESS

A British producer, a Spanish director; a star in mourning, another in debt; a script written around leftover sets from a previous film . . . 30 years ago, a young boy watched this movie on late night television, and it made an indelible impression.

John Connolly’s contribution to PS Publishing’s Midnight Movie Monographs series began as a discussion of HORROR EXPRESS, the 1972 film directed by Eugenio Martín and featuring Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, and Telly Savalas. It became an examination of the power of nostalgia, and its importance in our lives; a study of the processes through which a group of disparate individuals may be brought together in the name of a creative endeavor, and how the result may sometimes exceed the sum of its parts; and a reflection on the author’s relationship with his late father, among other matters.

HORROR EXPRESS was nominated for a 2018 Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in Non-Fiction.
