October 2021

Dear Folks,

It’s autumn, when a man’s thoughts variously turn to the passing of the seasons, falling leaves, the aches in his limbs that presage rainfall, the possibility of some kind of alternative career with the weather service involving them calling him to ask on a daily basis which part of him hurts and judging the forecast accordingly, and—thanks to vaccines, masks, and people looking out for one another—a return to in-person events, because I’ve missed you all. Well, most of you. The others know who they are.

So let us proceed to news of two impending books, chances to meet up, free stuff, and maybe even a word or two about what’s to come next year . . .

THE NAMELESS ONES reaches the United States and Canada at last

US and Canadian readers, your long wait is almost over: THE NAMELESS ONES will be available in hardcover, electronic, and audio versions on Tuesday, October 26. We thank you for your patience and apologize for the delays. With luck, a global pandemic will happen only once in our lifetimes (unless you’re old enough to have lived through the 1917 influenza, in which case, congratulations and best wishes to you).

THE NAMELESS ONES, just to remind you, is a book that catches up with Louis and Angel, Charlie Parker’s deadly companions, soon after the events of A BOOK OF BONES. Charlie Parker makes a notable appearance, but it is more a book set in Parker’s world than “a Parker novel.” (A Parker book is coming in 2022, about which more shortly.) Louis and Angel travel to Amsterdam and beyond to avenge an old ally.

Audiobook fans will be glad to know that that Jeff Harding reads THE NAMELESS ONES; you can listen to an excerpt from Chapter 1 here.

Tote bags, cards, and signed bookplates are currently in transit to these fine bookstores, which will be happy to take your orders:

SHADOW VOICES in Ireland and the UK — with live events!

The book coming out in the UK and Ireland on October 28, SHADOW VOICES, is something completely different: an 1,100-page survey of short genre fiction by Irish writers going back 300 years, including authors you’ve heard of and a few names you might not recognize, telling stories of horror, romance, science fiction and fantasy, crime and gothic suspense. Each story begins with an introduction from me, explaining why I chose the story and how it fits into the broader histories of Irish fiction, publishing, and literature itself.

My hope is that these stories and the essays that accompany them will inspire you to hunt out more by these authors. The book is meant to be a sort of tasting assortment for anyone interested in genre fiction, and should be a fine gift for readers looking to expand their horizons. To sweeten the deal, it’s a very small first printing in hardcover, with every copy signed by the editor (me). The first thousand copies will come with will come with a SHADOW VOICES tote bag adorned with replica signatures of some of the authors, and a little SHADOW VOICES envelope of ephemera related to the book.

“Where can I get this?” you cry. These fine booksellers are taking orders, and almost all of them will ship worldwide:

· Alan Hanna's Bookshop, Dublin

· Bookstation, stores throughout Ireland

· Bridge Books, Dromore (bridgebooks@hotmail.co.uk or via Twitter @BridgeBooksDro1)

· Dubray Books, stores throughout Ireland

· The Gutter Bookshop, Dublin

· Kennys, Galway

· No Alibis, Belfast

But wait, there’s more! We are planning two limited-capacity live events to launch SHADOW VOICES in Dublin and Belfast. We are still waiting for details of the Belfast event, to be sponsored by No Alibis Books, but this is Dublin:

October 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Cows Lane

Temple Bar

Dublin 8

This event is free, but you must register and only 45 tickets are available! We’re sorry, but for safety reasons, we can’t open the event any wider. If you are not able to get a ticket, you can still order a book for personalization here.

2022: Charlie Parker Returns

For those of who may be interested, the manuscript for next year’s Parker book has been safely delivered to my publishers. We’ll have more to tell you about it in the New Year, but it’s a little different in structure, because God forbid we should simply repeat ourselves.

Meanwhile, we’re continuing our efforts to close the gap between publication in North America and the rest of the world, and with that in mind it’s likely that the book will be published in North America in September and everywhere else in August, with only three or four weeks separating the pub dates instead of three or four months. Which will be nice.

And Everything Else

My radio show, ABC to XTC, continues on RTÉ Gold on Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. Dublin time, and you can listen back to the last few weeks of shows via the mobile app. Persistent internet challenges and some personal commitments are keeping me offline for the most part, but you can find me on Twitter @jconnollybooks, and the faithful Clair posts breaking news to Facebook.

So that’s it for now. With luck I’ll see some of you at our imminent events, but whether you’re picking up THE NAMELESS ONES, SHADOW VOICES or—my children thank you—both, I’m grateful as always for your interest, your kindness, and your support. We may have one more short newsletter to send before the end of the month, just so you don’t feel neglected.

Until then, be kind to yourself and one another. The world, as we’ve learned over the last 18 months or so, can be hard enough . . .

Best wishes,

John
