September 2024

Dear Reader,

I have instructed those close to me to rap me sharply on the head the next time I propose to publish two books in a single year, never mind in the same year that I also deliver my doctoral thesis. Masochism is all very well, and I'm sure it has its moments, but it's probably not sustainable as a lifestyle choice. Publishing two titles in one calendar year, between two publishers, requires the kind of coordination more usually associated with certain military operations. It’s a bit stressful.

Anyway, after much to-ing and fro-ing, we have a plan—an actual plan, not a concept of one (bit of topical political humour there)—for the promotion of NIGHT & DAY, which is set to be published next month. It has meant adding some previously unanticipated personal appearances in Ireland to the schedule, and a couple of extra dates in the United States, but all now appears to be well. We even have a rather lovely little gift to go with very early copies of the book, of which more below . . .

Counting down to NIGHT & DAY

NIGHT & DAY, a collection of short fiction and one long piece of non-fiction, will be published in just a few short weeks: October 22 in the United States and Canada; October 29 in Ireland, Australia and New Zealand; and October 31 (appropriately enough) in the United Kingdom. The book includes nine short stories, most of them previously unpublished, of which two are set in the world of the Caxton Private Lending Library & Book Depository; and a revised, extended monograph on nostalgia, cinema, horror, and the making of the 1972 movie HORROR EXPRESS, originally published as part of PS Publishing’s Midnight Movie Monographs series.
